‘Part Of Me’ was the last song we finished writing. In the end we returned to one of the first demos in terms of structure and feel. We wrote it in Antwerp, during a rainy studio session. There are some time-signature changes, which isn’t a typical approach for us, but sometimes playing around with...
[Verse 1]
It is a part of me
And it breaks my heart to see
I was a part of you
When no one else could be
[Verse 2]
It is a part of me
And it breaks my heart to see
It wasn't all of you
But it takes a lot to leave
[Pre-Chorus]
I know though whatever what my instincts tell me
I keep on coming back
I know if I'm honest that I can't see clear
And it's hard to hear that
[Chorus]
I found the answers in a place I don't belong
Will I bend?
Will I fold?
Will I surrender?
[Verse 3]
It is a part of me
And it breaks my arms to carry
You'll take it all with you
And leave it dead and buried
[Pre-Chorus]
I know though whatever what my instincts tell me
I keep on coming back
I know if I'm honest that I can't see clear
And its hard to hear that
[Chorus]
I found the answers in a place I don't belong
Will I bend?
Will I fold?
Will I surrender?
And I was bound to be the last man standing all along
Will I slip?
Will I break?
Will I remember?
Will I remember?
[Bridge]
Could it be it's a waste on somebody like me?
Could it be it's a waste on somebody like me?
[Chorus]
I found the answers in a place I don't belong
Will I bend?
Will I fold?
Will I surrender?
And I was bound to be the last man standing all along
Will I slip?
Will I break?
Will I remember?
Will I remember?
Will I remember?
[Outro]
It was a part of me
And it breaks my heart to see
I was a part of you
When no one else could be
Part of Me was written by Casper Starreveld & Eloi Youssef & Jan Haker & Niles Vandenberg.
Part of Me was produced by Kensington & Garth Richardson.
Kensington released Part of Me on Fri Nov 15 2019.
It was inspired by contrast, a huge opening followed by a small verse. The song reflects on a part of someone’s life, questioning certain routes we take, and asking yourself whether you are meant to do something, or that it’s all chance. We all make choices constantly, and with choice comes doubt.
This was probably the most challenging song to write, but in the end, returning to one of the first demos felt like the right thing to do. We took it from there and wrote new lyrics and pre-choruses, and ended up with something really powerful.
