[Intro]
Uh I'm gonna sing a song. Uh, tonight the door of the church is open, whiles I sing, for the sister and members, by letter, by experience, or by restoration (Amen) — any way the gospel recommends (That's right). And if you know you got religion, come on (Absolutely), give me your hand, and God your heart (Amen) (Yes sir). Know for yourself (Yes sir). I'm reminded of an anecdote — uh, tell me there is an old deacon in the church once, and the preacher opened the doors of the church, and one young lady came up, and she told her experience, and said "Brothers and sisters, I feel the Lord have forgive me for my sins (Yes sir) (Alright), and I want to join the church (Amen), I want to be baptized" (Yes sir). And all this time she's talking, this old deacon sitting over in the corner, saying "She didn't see me (Oh yes). She's got to see me somewhere (Yes sir). All the rest of the members saw me somewhere in the Spirit" (Yes sir) (Amen). And so, when she was through and they heard from her, he got up and made a motion. "Motion, Brother [?], she be turned back (Yes sir) (Huh), until she come right," (Yes) (Amen) and then, uh, said "She has to see me some way" (Yes) (Yes sir). And so they turned the girl back. She came back the next night and she said "Now I prayed and I prayed and I know I got religion, and I seen Uncle Tom" (Oh yes) (Yes sir). Old Uncle Tom [mulatto?], "Oh yes, that's right, I know you're right now" (Yes). And after a while, the daughter said "I seen Uncle Tom way down in hell ([?]) (Mm-mm), blue blazes of fire coming out his nostrils" (Uh-oh) ([?]). And Uncle Tom said "You're a liar, you ain't seen me nowhere" (Oh yes) (Yes sir). So you'll just know you've got religion (Amen).
[Chorus]
Know got religion, yes, yes
I know I got religion, yes, yes
I know I got religion, yes, yes
And the world can't do me no harm
[Verse 1]
Well, some said John the Baptist
Was nothing but a Jew
But the Holy Bible teaches me
That John was a preacher too
[Chorus]
I know I got religion, yes, yes
I know I got religion, yes, yes
I know I got religion, yes, yes
And the world can't do me no harm
[Verse 2]
Well, the Jews didn't believe in Jesus
And not a word He said
But He went on down to Lazarus' grave
And He raised him from the dead
[Chorus]
I know I got religion, yes, yes
I know I got religion, yes, yes
I Know I Got Religion (6929) was written by Rev. J. M. Gates.
