The intro to “Introvert: A Short Film About Mental Health”, by Miles Canady. In this song, Miles, with the help of poet Madison Leichnam, speaks partially from the perspective of his 9-year-old self and partially from his 15-year-old self, both lost in dealing with depression and anxiety.
[Intro Poem: Madison Leichnam]
Lights, camera, action
That's how it goes, right?
Lights up on a smiling mask, they are the camera
They remember everything you do wrong
All of your flaws recorded for the world to see
Then action
What can you do, right?
The only action you know how to do is run
Act one
Exposition shot, bird's eye view
You see a field bare as your current slate
You are a child
So young, so mild, so naive
You don't know what any of this means, so you walk
You walk slowly at first
And as your confidence grows, so does your pace
And soon your walk becomes a skip
The world around you is bright
Sunshine seeping through every part of your young skin
It fills your veins and spills from your tongue like a nursery rhyme
Who knew aging was such a crime?
Soon, the world seems darker
The shadows are moving now, flying towards you
You try to hide but they're inside now
Feeding on the child you once were
It's all a blur
[Verse: Miles Canady]
I'm out of breath, searching for air while I'm hiding, I'll put it down for a second
I'm running from life, but the more tired I get, the more my will to run lessens
I'm tired as fuck, honestly, I might give up, why even try? It's depressing
Happiness fleeting, but when somebody's in front of me, I put on my best impression
I missed your call, sorry, my back's on the wall, it's really nothing, I'm busy
I know that I'm lying, but it saves face every time, isn't it something so nifty?
Can't no one know, if so, my cover is blown, what'll they think of me then?
They'll probably run from me and I'm not ready for that, the least I can do is pretend
Anxious coming home? I'm facing it alone, tryna make it out this maze inside my zone
Mama said it was a phase? She was wrong, same reason why i'm scared to make it known
"Real life" is on the way, plus the pressure from this music got me suffocating
I'm not ready, I'm not ready, I can't take it, I can't deal with all the sudden changes
Family relationships growing distant, plus my friends been looking at me different
Annie keeps on calling, different numbers every time, it's never over in an instant
Got me in my room with all the lights off, sanity hanging by fringes
Phone ringing, like "I wonder who this is"
[Hook]
I noticed your smile's gone
What are you running from?
[Outro]
There's nothing to be ashamed of
We're all running from something
Right?
Right
