The teacher finishes his story to a mocking crowd
His voice a peaceful tone while all his audience is loud
He isn't angry for he knows it's a disruptive bunch
And even though he speaks the truth he fears it won't do much
Among the opposition, an opponent emerges
He says "I hear you loud and clear but your teaching is worthless
The story fits your needs but let's get realistic here
And tell it how it would happen if it were to appear
A man traverses the road down to Jerusalem
Mindless to his surroundings, so aloof to em
His lack of awareness would lead to his downfall
As bandits rob and beat him up, on the ground, small
He's been reduced to this, unable to cry for help
Could only whimper in pain, from all the damage dealt
His spirits lift when he sees a priest pass by
And yet were dashed, like priest did, leaving him to die
He lies hopeless as the sun starts to disappear
Still in shock that the priest acted so cavalier
He sees a Levite coming but has lost good expectations
Surely enough he stays ignored, losing all sensation
A Samaritan now approaches on his street side
The man don't like him but hopes he won't make a bee line
After one look he vanishes, leaves the man to die
Hours later he gives up, stab wounds at night, so
Tell me who was his neighbor, in the picture I painted?
Would someone else come later, could his death be belated?
Guess it doesn't matter, what is done has been done
And we have witnessed death, under the morning sun
Tell me who was his neighbor, in the picture I painted?
Would his death come later, if not self instigated?
Teacher you make assumptions about what the man will do
And if he doesn't love his neighbor tell me why I should too"
The preacher finishes his sermon to the congregation
A humble bunch, finding nothing there for condemnation
They respect the word and want to apply it to their lives
Writing and highlighting in Bibles, every night
As everyone is leaving one man walks up to the pastor
He says "I see your point but tell me, who are you after?
All of your words fall on sheeps' ears, it's nothing new
In fact I'd say it's outdated, an archaic truth
A person coming to faith may not relate to this
People come from broken homes, growing neighborless
Not to mention the Samaritan wouldn't have saved
Racial tensions are bad now but they've been for ages
And it's insincere to pretend otherwise
Your congregation may love you but not the 'other guys'
You know, the ones that you should seek to repent
So please get realistic and learn how to teach to them"
The preacher responds, "I fear you missed my point
The Samaritan's behavior of helping's disjoint
But that is to show that we should be as he did there
And not let our culture divide us into bias unfair
Maybe it wouldn't have happened outside this parable
This is instruction on behavior, is that terrible?"
The man replies "no one would do that, look at our country
We deny rights for minorities and oppress for money"
The preacher then says "you're right, we need to do better
We're called to be perfect and loving, yet we choose cheddar
So go and love on your neighbors, show they're not worthless"
And they agree and part ways until the next service
The Bible may be old, but it never loses meaning
But as I read I can't seem to find the truth I'm needing
I keep on coming back to Luke 10 and I don't know why
I guess I hope my neighbor will not pass me by
