Men Are From Mars Annotated

I am locked in a prison,
I’m banished to a place where my own ego and pride
Stand side by side to keep me company

As past mistakes now embrace the lines upon my face,
For apologies can be so hard to say

I had to travel back through time and space to find myself,
Right here and right now,
To where I first met her

A million light-years from this darkened nebula,
Where we soaked in the full spectrum of infra-red to ultra violet light,
And lit up the night sky in a glorious sight,
And orbited around a kiss,
Absorbing each other’s bliss,
With Paradise’s wish

Before the atmospheres changed,
And things got rearranged,
For in this brave new world I only exist as a stranger,
An alien,
A prisoner

But my prison has no bars,
Yet it can trap a rocketship from Mars,
It has no floor,
It has no walls,
It has no door,
It has no halls,
It has no ceiling

Leaving others quite disbelieving that it even exists at all,
As my spirit rages against my flesh,
Against my rise,
Against my fall

And out here in space,
They say that no one can hear you scream,
But I’ve got to try to remember exactly what I’ve seen,
I’ve been to other galaxies,
I’ve witnessed fifth-dimensional fantasies

But, actually,
I’m still scared of what the future might have to say,
So I made a wish upon a star to free my heart from yesterday,
And that’s why I must escape,
For she has travelled to a far-away castle,
As she attempts to feel safe

And now I’m losing my way,
And I must make haste,
Because apologies are so hard to say

But my prison has no locks,
Or clocks,
Yet I can still hear the keys click as time tocks

And as I watch:
I can see no gates or barb-wired fences,
And I know that some of you will think,
That this is only the pretence of a fool,
Who is actually free to leave anytime that he chooses,
And that the battle that he wins,
Will be the war that he loses

For I am locked in a prison,
Where ego and pride deny me the simple joys of living,
The simple joys of loving,
The simple joys of re-admission,
Into this brand new solar system
