If my family is my nation, then am I a citizen?
If home has my heart, does its laws get written in…
Ways to understand, to shake our neighbours' hands,
United, so we can embrace our fellow man

Or perhaps y’know,
That’s just the way it goes,
And the reason we never grow is just a part of the plan,
And here I am alone with just my pen in my hand,
Damn!

So if I look to my borough, would its focus be thorough?
And how would I view others who I don’t see as brothers?
And can I spare any love for the pushers and shovers?
And when night-time comes, do I hide undercovers?

Or do I claim my city?
The grimey and the gritty…
Concrete streets, can I seek to find that which uplifts me?
Because I need something now,
And I need something quickly…

Now, what about my country?
Isn't that where my love lies?
But should I fight in a war that doesn’t seem right?
And how can I live if you have to die?

Now, what about my colour?
Doesn’t that link me to another?
Sharing the same struggle with my sisters and my brothers
But who then belongs? And who gets pushed with the others?
Do we divide the grades and shades to allocate who suffers?

If you dictate around hate then what happens to love,
So you ask me where I stay?
It’s with none of the above

You see we all seem to want to belong and just
Focus on our differences that are strong in us,
So we look for groups to identify me.
And I join with a gang because it defines me,
And they give me a little flag and I let it fly free
And I go along with the plan because it dignifies me,
It protects me from those who won’t recognise me,
See?

You see there’s a time to fight,
And a time to chill,
A time for forgiveness,
And a time to kill,
But nobody talks about the times we feel,
That if we’re all related,
There’s a time to heal

So if the human family is my nation,
Then am I a Citizen?
