On “Ivy,” Frank reflects on his mistakes and explores a failed relationship. With Frank’s vocals laid over melancholic production, “Ivy” is a heart-breaker of a song that could be seen as a sequel to his April 2012 track, “Thinkin' Bout You.”
Parts of the song show Frank drowning in tears and fille...
[Chorus]
I thought that I was dreamin' when you said you love me
The start of nothin'
I had no chance to prepare, I couldn't see you comin'
The start of nothin'
Ooh, I could hate you now
It's quite alright to hate me now
When we both know that deep down
The feeling still deep down is good
[Verse 1]
If I could see through walls, I could see you're faking
If you could see my thoughts, you would see our faces
Safe in my rental like an armored truck back then
We didn't give a fuck back then
I ain't a kid no more
We'll never be those kids again
We'd drive to Syd's
Had the X6 back then, back then
No matter what I did, my waves wouldn't dip back then
Everything sucked back then, we were friends
[Chorus]
I thought that I was dreamin' when you said you love me
The start of nothin'
I had no chance to prepare, I couldn't see you comin'
The start of nothin'
Ooh, I could hate you now
It's quite alright to hate me now
But we both know that deep down
The feeling still deep down is good
[Verse 2]
In the halls of your hotel
Arm around my shoulder so I could tell
How much I meant to you, meant it sincere back then
We had time to kill back then
You ain't a kid no more, we'll never be those kids again
It's not the same, ivory's illegal, don't you remember?
[Bridge]
I broke your heart last week
You'll probably feel better by the weekend
Still remember, had you going crazy
Screamin' my name, the feeling deep down is good
[Chorus]
I thought that I was dreamin' when you said you love me
The start of nothin'
Had no chance to prepare, couldn't see you comin'
And we started from nothin'
Ooh, I could hate you now
It's alright to hate me now
We both know that deep down
The feeling still deep down is good
[Outro]
All the things I didn't mean to say, I didn't mean to do
There were things you didn't need to say, did you mean to? Mean to?
I've been dreamin' of you, dreamin' of you
I've been dreamin' of you, dreamin' of you
I've been dreamin', dreamin'

Ivy explores a failed relationship of Frank’s as he reflects on their relationship and his mistakes.
Frank and the person he’s singing about seems to have grown up and grew apart in the process. While he was overwhelmed when his partner told him that he/she loved him, he wasn’t prepared emotionally...
It may be that ivy is somewhat of a parasitic plant. It strangles adjacent trees and isn’t good for their health. In the context of the song, it may be a reflection of their unhealthy relationship.
That was my version of collage or bricolage, how we experience memory sometimes, it’s not linear. We’re not telling the stories to ourselves, we know the story, we’re just seeing it in flashes overlaid.
The lyric “it started from nothing” has been much debated on this page, as it sounds like “the start of nothing” is a better syllabic fit.
The lyric is actually “it started from nothing,” as verified in the album accompanying magazine, Boy’s Don’t Cry.
Rostam Batmanglij was credited for his contributions on this song. He recollected to Billboard magazine:
As soon as he played me ‘Ivy’ in its original form, I had a vision for what it could sound like.
“Ivy” debuted at #80 on the Billboard Hot 100 on the chart week of September 10, 2016.
Possibly, for dramatic effect. The jarring sound at the song’s conclusion could be the result of someone smashing an electric guitar while it’s plugged in. The distorted, crunchy, screeching noises are the amplified vibrations of a dying instrument; the guitar’s last breaths.
At some point before the release of Blonde in August 2016, Frank Ocean commissioned London-based type designer Kia Tasbihgou to create artwork for a series of singles, including the songs “Nikes,” “White Ferrari,” “Ivy,” “Self Control,” and “Both Sides” (likely an early name for “Chanel,” released i...
