Michael Friedman was an American composer and lyricist best known for his musical Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson which opened on Broadway in October 2010. He received a 2007 Obie award for sustained excellence.
Friedman’s theatre credits include original music for Misery (Broadway, 2015) and The Tempest (Off-Broadway, 2015), and music and lyrics for The Fortress of Solitude (Off-Broadway, 2014).
Friedman was a founding Associate Artist and member of the Board of Directors for The Civilians, an artist-led investigative theatre company that creates theatrical events that seek to promote inquisitions of current issues.
Friedman died on 9 September 2017, at only 41. The Public Theater, where he worked as an artist-in-residence and director of an audience engagement program, announced his death, explaining that his death was due to complications from HIV/AIDS. Friedman had been working on a musical adaptation of All the President’s Men and a sequel to A Chorus Line.
