Psalms 8 and 4:
"What is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou visitest him?"
David in this lecture asked the question of "What is man?" realizing himself that he was a man, one of God's chosen creatures, one of the elect of His own choice. But yet he knew that God had some specific purpose in His care, and in His— in His guidance, and in His protection of man. So he asked the question "What is man, that thou art mindful of him?" He thought within himself, "Man must be something of vast importance. I know that he is a little lower than the angel, that he is chosen and elected by God for the ruling dominion power over the things of the Earth. But yet, what else is there about him, that God is so mindful of him and cares so much for him? Why He cares for him more than anything else?"
Because he is made in His own likeness and in His own image. In the image of God created He man, and all the things of the world are under his rule and his care. Then why should man be disobedient to the will of the God? Because of his sinful flesh and because of his thoughts of life that confront him, it is realized that man is weak, but is immortal in spirit. But God has so ordained that he can be brought into reconciliation with Him again. How, may the question then be asked, can he brought— be brought into reconciliation with God? Only by the saving, and by the death of His Son, Jesus Christ, can man be saved from the [? of death], of which Adam himself fell from grace.
Man, oh man, I say unto thee today: look not at the things of the world, but look unto Jesus as the Bright and Morning Star of your life. He alone, it is, that can help you and can save you when the world is on fire. When the troubles of life are confronting you, when you’re on your downward road, look unto Him and cry "Help me, Father" and He will rescue you as a brand from eternal burning. Even when the world has turned your— its back on you, when father and mother have shut the doors of their hearts in your face, you may say unto Him, "I know that my Redeemer lives, because He lives as the hope of eternal glory in my soul." And when the warfare of this life is ended, we may look and realize that beyond this veil of sorrow, there awaits for us a crown of righteousness, which Jesus Christ, the righteous Judge Himself, shall place upon our heads, and we can then realize that man is of the image and the making of God.
What Is Man was written by Rev. W. A. White.
