About

Thurgood Marshall was the first African-American Supreme Court justice, serving on the liberal Warren court for 24 years. He is perhaps most famous for his earlier advocacy as a lawyer, successfully arguing for school integration in the Supreme Court case Brown v. Board of Education.

Thurgood Marshall Lyrics

[Verse 1]
I have a new hero now, a handsome
Black man from a different time
A previous decade in a fast-paced America
I have a brand new take on history and now
I believe in the law, yes sir, I do
Believe in things like America, I still do believe
When people say they love the law
This model of a man is what they talk about
A tower of a man in the history of this great country
A righteous and a mighty force to wash away
The shameful sins of a dark chapter
In the history of this fine land, you see

[Chorus]
Hey, Thurgood Marshall, won't you help me out
'cause I've been slowly fading away this year
And Thurgood Marshall, don't you let me down
'cause I want to be inspired and a-mystified by the law

[Verse 2]
Oh, Aristotle once said the law is reason
Free from passion, feeling and emotion, or
Some other rich earth bullshit like that
But Thurgood Marshall was a man so full of heart
That made the law bow down and recognize
That love and earnest respect is what this
Country is all about
I was a sad law student lost in all the books
Piled in a corner of the library, a weary caffeinated
Soldier of the big man. And
Justice Marshall reached out of the history books
And spoke to me, 'cause those dead do rise again
Yes sir they still do rise again

[Chorus]
Hey, Thurgood Marshall, won't you help me out
'cause I've been slowly fading away this year
And Thurgood Marshall, don't you let me down
'cause I want to be inspired and a-mystified by the law

[Verse 3]
Some day in the future, I'll have whiskey and fine cigars
I'll have a favorite steak restaurant down on Wall Street
I'll done club a young seal pup for the corporation and
I won't know what to do with all this viscous
Garnet blood on my hands
I'll need a sermon on the mount, need to be born again
Turn a new leaf, a second spring, a new and visceral reminder
That good can triumph over evil, and the law
Can be a terrifying blunt force to strike the
Love of country into brave young hearts

[Chorus]
Hey, Thurgood Marshall, won't you help me out
'cause I've been slowly fading away this year
And Thurgood Marshall, don't you let me down
'cause I want to be inspired and a-mystified by the law
