The title track of Sleater-Kinney’s fourth studio album was named after the 1972 comedy-drama film The Hot Rock starring Robert Redford and George Segal as a pair of bickering jewel thieves. The lyrics of the song repeatedly make reference to a diamond-stealing caper as in the film.
[Intro]
I'm on to you
Before the night is through
I'm going to steal this diamond
Hot rock to you
[Chorus]
I just need to know
(I'm not the one you wanted)
What you want me to feel
(Not the thing you keep)
Counterfeit or real?
[Verse 1]
(I thought all along)
It's a caper theme (This was everything)
There's a getaway car (Try not to look too hard)
A diamond to steal (To find that it's not real)
A plan that might go wrong (I knew all along)
If this is a set-up (You weren't everything)
Please let me know (Then in the darkest hour)
I can't risk my life for (I watched you disappear)
A gilded stone
[Chorus]
(I'm not the one you wanted)
What you want me to feel
(Not the thing you keep)
I'm on to you
[Verse 2]
(How was I to know)
It's a crafty scene (This rock was so fragile?)
Full of power and greed (It cracked in my hands)
You tell me not to steal (While I was holding on)
Yet you still want a thief (An uncut stone)
You write out the plans (is flawed and beautiful)
I carry out the act (Don't try to size me down)
But then I lose it all if (To fit your tiny hands)
I can't bring it back
[Chorus]
(I'm not the girl you wanted)
What you want me to feel
(Not the one you keep)
Counterfeit or real?
[Bridge]
It's not real
You don't need to tell me that it's not real
You don't need to tell me
[Chorus]
How am I to know
(Not the one you wanted)
That you were ever here?
(Not the one to keep)
[Outro]
On to you
Before this night is through
I'm going to steal my heart back
And find a love that's true
Hot rock to you
