I don’t do anything to cause trouble
It just happens that what I do does
I’m proud to be a troublemaker
Like the lion and the cobra
Not ashamed of my nature
Frank Sinatra said that he would kick your ass
When you refused to sing the National Anthem
I guess he just couldn’t understand
Why someone wouldn’t be as proud of our flag as him
A rich white man
You sang a Bob Marley song
Then you said fight the real enemy
Then you held up a picture of the Pope
And you ripped it to pieces on live TV
No one clapped and no one booed
They say the air went out of the room
The TV show people didn’t know what to do
They had never seen a woman be as brave as you
And you knew they would hate you and they did
And you knew all the damage it would do
And you knew that you might never sing again
Or at least no one would listen to you
But you used the spotlight you were given
To try and shed some light into the darkness
You used your privilege at your own expense
To try and make some kind of difference
And the next week on the same show
Joe Peschi held up the same picture of the pope
He said not to worry he taped it together
And he turned your action into a joke
And everyone in the crowd laughed
He said if he was there last week
He would have given you such a slap
Fuck that man and fuck the Pope
And I really hope you know
Your courage gave us hope
That your courage gave me hope
