This song is about a desperate need to let go, of your ideals and beliefs
Said lyricist Sam Herring when introducing this song in a 2017 live performance at SXSW.
The single was released with an lyric video in American Sign Language, featuring interpreter Jonathan Lamberton. According to Sam Herri...
[Verse 1]
In parting ways
And parting hearts
A dress of leaves blows to the winds
Take these sacrificial remnants, untended
Bashed to dust
And trust distressed
Red cheeks, caved in
[Chorus]
I don't believe anymore
Don't believe anymore
'Cause all we know, is gone and cold
I don't believe anymore
Don't grieve anymore
'Cause all I hold, is all I own
[Verse 2]
Is this a desperate wish for dying?
Or a wish that dying cease?
The fear that keeps me going and going and going
Is the same fear that brings me to my knees
[Chorus]
I don't believe anymore
Don't believe anymore
'Cause what was gold, is gone and cold
I don't believe anymore
I won't grieve anymore
'Cause all we are, is bled and gone
[Verse 3]
I am the air, the after
Always in the clouds
Searching for some answer
Parted now, I am the shore, repeated
Becoming air
I'm finally free
[Chorus]
I don't believe anymore
Don't believe anymore
What I can't see, can't hold to me
I don't believe anymore
I won't grieve anymore
'Cause what was gold, is gone and cold
I don't believe anymore
Don't believe anymore
'Cause what was gold, is gone and cold
I don't believe anymore
Don't believe anymore
I won't grieve anymore
Won't grieve anymore

Cave was written by Gerrit Welmers & Samuel T. Herring & William Cashion.
Cave was produced by John Congleton.
Future Islands released Cave on Fri Mar 24 2017.
We proposed the idea to our management and they were like, “That’s a really cool idea, here’s someone that we have in mind…”, so that’s how Jonathan came into it. They sent us the videos of him, which had gone viral and his emotive expression was just exactly what we were looking for. And it worked...
Samuel T. Herring via The Times
Cave is a goodbye to someone I’ve held on to for a long time, someone who has appeared in a lot of our songs over the years. I was trying to shed that feeling. I don’t think I have let go, actually.
