About Marek Grechuta

Polish singer, songwriter and lyricist. Born in 1945 in Zamość, Poland, he started his musical career in 1966 after meeting composer Jan Kanty Pawluśkiewicz, with whom he founded the student cabaret band Anawa. They performed songs composed by him and Pawluśkiewicz, quickly earning renown in Poland and receiving multiple awards. His music combined sung poetry with jazz and progressive rock influences.

Aside from his work with Anawa (Marek Grechuta & Anawa, Korowód, Wiosna – ach, to ty, Śpiewające obrazy), he recorded two albums with his short lived band WIEM (Droga za Widnokres, Magia obłoków), worked with famed Polish cabaret group Piwnica pod Baranami and released several solo albums (W malinowym chruśniaku, Niezwykłe miejsca).

Grechuta often used the work of various Polish poets, such as Bolesław Leśmian or Witkacy as lyrics for his songs. He also collaborated on musicals and theatre plays like Szalona lokomotywa and Kopciuszek. He was the recipient of numerous awards, including Grand Prix at the National Festival of Polish Song in Opole, the Fryderyk Music Award and the Silver Cross of Merit.

He died in 2006 and was buried in Kraków, Poland, where he lived for most of his life.
