Medical Wonder Annotated

(Okay, I was one of five medical researchers working as a team
We were hired as a team! It was a two day job—)

Um, i-is this the beginning?
Well, she doesn't really say anything until much...later on
Yeah, I’ll decide that for myself. Can I hear it from the beginning, please?
From the beginning!

I don't remember! I said it and I mean it, I don't remember! Why don’t you ask one of the other four? Yes, there were five of us! I was one of five medical researchers working as a team, we were hired as a team! It was a two day job, my name is Judy Barton, I come from Salina, Kansas, I work at Magnum's and I live here!

Yes, only two days. We were paid for two days of w—
Uh...I...I don't remember the exact amount, it—
Two million dollars, each. That was even more back then.
You must know when it happened! You've gotta know something, right? Are you from the government, 'cause if you're from the government you're way too late! It was twenty years ag—!

May 6th and 7th, 1997—. I was 23, I was the youngest of the five—

Stop the tape. Did you hear the way she said that?
You think she's lying?
Did you hear the way she said that.
No, I don’t think I caught that...
Rewind, please.

May 6th and 7th, 1997—. I was 23, I was the youngest of the five—

Listen to how she says that, "I was 23". "23". Okay.
You think she’s lying?
That's not the point, ’course she's lying. She's been lying from the beginning. Question is, why is she lying? Who does she think we are?

I was a genius, I was a genius before the experiment, now I'm just—!!
Okay. I was one of five medical researchers working as a team. We were hired as a team. It was a two day job. We were paid two million dollars each. To drive to the lab. To receive instructions. To look through the microscope, to look at the floor. To not look into the eyes of any of the other four medical researchers. To drive home at five o’clock without crashing on purpose. To not tell anyone. To not look in the mirror. To not write anything down. To not tape record, video or otherwise document any information relating to the experiment. To sleep with a metal plate on our tongues. To wake up on day 2, without screaming, to drive back to the lab without crashing on purpose, to look through the microscope, to look at the floor. To not look into the eyes of any of the other four medical researchers. To drive home at five o'clock without crashing, without screaming, without telling anyone. To sleep without the metal plate on our tongues. To wake up...on day 3...and not remember anything. We were promised that...that we wouldn't have to live with memories. Two million dollars to remember only long enough to finish the experiment, it was so much money...for two days forgotten forever...wake up...stretch, wrap your eyes, pour orange juice and coffee, read the paper, take a walk in the park! Meet a fella, settle down, have children, live a clean life, live a long life, never wonder May 6th...never remember May 7th...live a long life, live a clean life, die old...no trace, no memory, no mistake...never wonder, never remember, never wonder, never remember, never wonder, never remember, never wonder, never remember, never wonder, never remem—...

Yes...there was a mistake. I messed up! I...I slept with the metal plate on my tongue and I wasn't supposed to do that! Not on both nights! Only on the first night! Sleep with...metal plate on the...first night. I don't know why I did that...I was so nervous...and terrified...a-and it just seemed safer to sleep with the metal plate like it would...hold me... So I didn't wake up on day 3 and stretch, and rub my eyes. I woke up and gagged on the metal plate, and I remembered everything...

Um, is there something happening with the lights in here? 'Cause it seems like they're fluctuating and I can't concentrate at all. Five, can you concentrate? Alright, then. titrate silver nitrate, I'll prepare the Benzedrine test tube, can you distill two milligrams of sodi—... Oh my god...the lights...what's happening...what's happening with their hair?! Oh...oh, I can't breathe and...Oh...Five, can you breathe? Is this part of the experiment?! What're we involved in here?! Oh my god...this is airborne, these are germs, this is airfare...this is warfare!! Don't—don't look into my eyes, don't look at my eyes, we're finishing the experiment, finish the experiment, don't look at my eyes, think of the money, two million dollars...two million dollars... Four billion cells...four billion cells, this is airborne!! This is warfare!! Don't look at me, finish the experiment...I'm driving home without crashing, without screaming, without telling anyone, I'm sleeping without the metal plate on my tongue ahahahaha—AAA!!...
