“World War” is one a few early Cure songs that was not featured on the original release of their debut album Three Imaginary Boys in 1979, but is one of the five alternate songs released on Boys Don’t Cry for North America, Australia and some European countries the following year.
[Verse 1]
Dressed in Berlin black
I was only playing
Disguise my words to fool you
From what I was saying
Mud trench, meat stench
The fatherland is looking on
Grip you in a Luger lock
This will be the big one
[Chorus]
World war
No one would believe me
No one's a winner
No one's a loser
Just a dead friend
[Verse 2]
Heaven, heaven
Give me pride
Give me a golden hand
Smash them with an iron rule
Spit them out like sand
Sit and wait, then run like hell
Run like hell one time again
Sow the seeds of hate
Underneath destruction
[Chorus]
World war
No one would believe me
No one's a winner
No one's a loser
Just a dead friend
[Outro]
World war
No one would believe me
No one's a winner
No one's a loser
Just a dead friend
World War was written by Robert Smith & Lol Tolhurst & Michael Dempsey.
World War was produced by Chris Parry.
In a fanzine, Robert Smith shared the following about “World War”, “Do The Hansa”, “Pillbox Tales” and “Heroin Face”:
none of these four songs have any real meaning
In 1996, Smith told The Big Takeover:
I think “World War” is the worst song the Cure ever did.
