What The Stars See Lyrics

[Verse 1: Cassadee Pope]
Are we really over?
'Cause I'm a couple glasses in
Can't help but want a little bit of closure
Are you waitin' by the phone? Are you out, are you at home?
'Cause I can't stop picturin', what you may or may not be doin'
Wish my eyes could shine down on you

[Chorus: Cassadee Pope & Lindsay Ell]
I wanna see what the stars see
Are you good? Are you sad? Are you missing me?
Are you a little bit lonely?
I wanna know what you're feeling underneath
That midnight, moonlight, heartbreak sky
Wishin' I could read your mind
You left me in the dark, and wherever you are, I wanna be
Tonight, I wanna see what the stars see
I wanna see, wanna see

[Verse 2: Karen Fairchild with Cassadee Pope]
They're so lucky
They know exactly where you are, what you're feelin' in your heart
And if you're sorry
That you're not with me tonight, that you ever said goodbye

[Chorus: Cassadee Pope & Lindsay Ell]
I wanna see what the stars see
Are you good? Are you sad? Are you missing me?
Are you a little bit lonely?
I wanna know what you're feeling underneath
That midnight, moonlight, heartbreak sky
Wishin' I could read your mind
You left me in the dark, and wherever you are, I wanna be
Tonight, I wanna see what the stars see
Yeah, yeah, I wanna see, wanna see

[Bridge: Cassadee Pope & Lindsay Ell]
Are you cryin' in your car tryin' not to fall apart?
Are you wondering about me too?
Or are you throwin' 'em back, happy that I'm in the past
Lovin' up on someone new?

[Chorus: Cassadee Pope & Lindsay Ell]
I wanna see what the stars see
Are you good? Are you sad? Are you missin' me? Oh
Are you a little bit lonely?
I wanna know what you're feeling underneath (Underneath, yeah)
That midnight, moonlight, heartbreak sky
Wishin' I could read your mind
You left me in the dark (In the dark), and wherever you are, I wanna be
I wanna see what the stars see
Tonight, I wanna see what the stars see

[Outro: Cassadee Pope & Lindsay Ell]
Yeah, ayy, I wanna see, wanna see
I wanna see, wanna see
Yeah, ayy-ayy

How did the song come together?

The song came together after a starry night at home in Nashvile. The thought immediately popped into my head of how their perspective is better than any of ours down here. I thought of the title “What The Stars See” and figured I’d bring it into my Zoom write the next day with Lindsay Rimes and Jake...

What inspired it?

After thinking of the title, I reminisced on all the times I wished I could see what an ex was doing after a breakup. Going from knowing what someone is doing every minute to not knowing anything is such a jolt. It also made me think of all the people in the world who may have lost touch with family...

What was the process of making the song like?

“What The Stars See” was the first song I had ever written on Zoom. I remember being really anxious about it, wondering if we’d get anything good out of a virtual session. But to my delight, it was actually very productive. When you take away the distractions of traffic, getting someone to watch the...

What was Pope's favorite part about working with both women on the song?

I never really get to see either of them in their creating modes. I see them on stage, at dinner, at each other’s houses, etc… but I’ve never been a witness to them creating. So getting to see that was so fun. They’re both so talented and have such great instincts in the studio.
