I saw something in the water
Not certain what it is I saw
Came by bill or wave or seashell
It came by fin and tail and claw
I saw a shadow near the surface
Slick and black and wet and raw
I saw something that's for certain
Not sure though what it is I saw
Waved and billowed like a curtain
Stabbed the depths just like a tide
Stirred the pattern of the surface
Was clam or weed or brine
I saw something in the water
A dark triangle gliding past
Slow at first the texture bubbled
A whip of shape came curling fast
And if it hadn't broke the surface
Then dove so deep and disappeared
I would not still stare at the water
In hopes that it might reappear
I saw something in the water
Not certain what it really was
But I'm still here watching the water
Watching the water just because
