Patterson Hood has said that “Two Daughters and a Beautiful Wife” is about the murder of fellow musician and close friend Bryan Harvey and his family in 2006. Harvey’s family were one of several victims in the Richmond spree killings of 2006.
[Verse 1]
When he reached the gates of heaven
He didn't understand
He knew that friends were coming over
Or was it all a dream?
Was it all a crazy dream?
[Verse 2]
He saw them playing there before him
What were they doing there?
It felt like home, it must be alright
Or was it all a dream?
Was it all a crazy dream?
[Verse 3]
Memories replay before him
All the tiny moments of his life
Lying 'round in bed on a Saturday morning
Two daughters and a wife
Two daughters and a beautiful wife
[Verse 4]
Meanwhile on Earth his friends come over
Shocked and horrified
Dolls and flowers by the storefront
And everybody cried
Everybody cried and cried
[Verse 5]
Is there vengeance up in heaven?
Or are those things left behind?
Maybe every day is Saturday morning
Two daughters and a wife
Two daughters and a beautiful wife
Two daughters and a beautiful wife

Drive-By Truckers released Two Daughters and a Beautiful Wife on Tue Jan 22 2008.
“‘Two Daughters And A Beautiful Wife’ is about a horrible tragedy, a family we knew who were murdered in their home on New Year’s Day. That was one of the first I wrote for this record, trying to make sense of something there’s no making sense of.”
