This song is based on The Day I Traded My Dad For Two Goldfish, a children’s book by Neil Gaiman.
Its main focus is on the part of the story where the child who made the original trade has to track down his missing father after his mother has found out what he’s done.
I never should have traded you
Is there anything, anything I can do
To start to try to make amends?
I'm gonna knuckle down
Buckle down
Find you and then
Home, home, home
I’ll bring you back
Home, home, home
Now at the time I thought it through
It seemed a magnificent thing to do, but
Now I've gone and made a mess
I'm gonna walk the town
Up and down
Find you again
Home, home, home
I’ll bring you back
Home, home, home
I'll bring you back
Home, home, home
I'll bring you back
Home, home, home
There you are crawling on your hands and knees
When the only groveling to be done now
Should be done by me
(I never should have traded you...)
There you are struggling under wire and fence
I know I should be begging
Will you forgive me?
I just lost my sense
(I never should have traded you! I never should have traded you!)
Home, home, home
I'll bring you back
Home, home, home
I'll bring you back
Home, home, home
I'll bring you back
Home, home, home
