“This Plum Is Too Ripe” is the first song of the second act of the musical “The Fantasticks”.
In this song, the fathers (Hucklebee and Bellomy) and lovers (Matt and Luisa) begin to complain about one another, noticing all the flaws that have become glaringly visible by daylight.
[LUISA, spoken]
This plum is too ripe!
[MATT, spoken]
Sorry!
Please don't watch me while I'm eating.
[LUISA, spoken]
Sorry!
[HUCKLEBEE, spoken]
You're about to drown that magnolia.
[BELLOMY, spoken]
Sorry!
You're—standing—
In—my—kumquat!
[HUCKLEBEE, spoken]
Sorry!
[LUISA]
Take away the golden moonbeam
Take away the tinsel sky
What at night seems oh, so scenic
May be cynic by and by
[MATT]
Take away the painted sunset
Take away the blue lagoon
What at night seems oh, so scenic
May be cynic much too soon
[HUCKLEBEE]
Take away the sense of drama
Take away the puppet play
What at night seems oh, so scenic
May be cynic by today
[BELLOMY]
Take away the secret meetings
Take away the chance to fight
What at night seems oh, so scenic
May be cynic in the light
[LUISA, MATT, HUCKLEBEE & BELLOMY]
So take it away and paint it upright!
So take it away and decorate it!
So take it away, that sun is too bright!
[LUISA]
I say that it really is a pity
[LUISA & MATT]
It used to be so pretty
[LUISA, MATT, HUCKLEBEE, BELLOMY]
Take away the golden moonbeam
Take away the tinsel sky Take away the painted sunset
What at night seems Take away Take away
Oh, so scenic The blue lagoon The sense of drama
May be cynic What at night seems Take away Take away
By and by Oh, so scenic The puppet play The secret meetings
May be cynic What at night seems Take away
Much too soon Oh, so scenic The chance to fight
May be cynic by today What at night seems oh, so scenic
May be cynic in the light
[HUCKLEBEE & BELLOMY]
By today
[MATT, HUCKLEBEE & BELLOMY]
Much too soon
[LUISA, MATT, HUCKLEBEE & BELLOMY]
By and by
[MATT, spoken]
This plum is too ripe!
[LUISA, HUCKLEBEE & BELLOMY, spoken]
Sorry!
