This song marks the show’s climax, and takes place in Act 2. El Gallo offers to take Luisa to see what the world has to offer, and gives her a mask which he instructs her to wear as they “travel” around the world in a dreamlike sequence. For each place they “travel” to, they see Matt (who Luisa does...
[LUISA, spoken]
Take me there!
[EL GALLO, spoken]
Where?
[LUISA, spoken]
To the parties! To the world!
[EL GALLO, spoken]
But I'm a bandit.
There's a price upon my head.
[LUISA, spoken]
Oh! I was hoping that there would be!
[EL GALLO, spoken]
You and I!
Us together!
[LUISA, spoken]
Yes. Dancing forever and forever.
[EL GALLO]
Round and round
Till the break of day
Candles glow
Fiddles play
Why not be wild if we feel that way?
Reckless and terribly gay!
Round and round
'Neath a magic spell
Velvet gown
Pink lapel
Life is a colorful carousel
Reckless and terribly gay!
[LUISA]
I'm rеady anytime
If you'll take me, I'm
Rеady to go!
So show the way to me
I will try to be
Ready to go!
[EL GALLO]
I seem to see Venice:
We're on a lagoon
A gondolier's crooning
A gondola tune
The air makes your hair
Billow blue in the moon!
[LUISA]
I could swoon!
[EL GALLO]
You're so blue in the moon!
[The MUTE hands LUISA a mask. When held in front of one's face, it blocks out any little tell-tale traces of compassion or horror. At EL GALLO's urging, LUISA holds the mask up to her face.]
[LUISA, spoken]
Look at the peasants!
They're lighting candelabras
No. I believe they're lighting torches
Yes, see—
They've started burning the palaces!
Oh, there goes the Doge!
[HENRY, spoken]
Arrivederci!
[LUISA, spoken]
Oh, what fun! I adore pyrotechnics!
[MATT rises, writhing, as HENRY and MORTIMER billow their "flames" up and down his body. LUISA puts down her mask.]
[LUISA, spoken]
That man—look out, he's burning
My God, he's on fire!
[EL GALLO, spoken]
Keep on dancing
[LUISA, spoken]
But he's burning!
[EL GALLO, spoken]
Just put up your mask
Then it's pretty
[LUISA puts up her mask.]
[MATT, spoken]
Help!
[LUISA, spoken]
Oh. Yes, isn't he beautiful!
He's all sort of orange
Red-orange
That’s one of my favorite colors
[MATT, spoken]
Help!
[LUISA, spoken]
You look lovely!
[EL GALLO & LUISA]
We'll just dance! (Ah, ah, ah, ah-ah, ah, ah, ah-ah)
We'll kick up our heels to music (Ah, ah, ah-ah)
And dance! (Ah, ah, ah, ah-ah, ah, ah, ah-ah)
Until my head reels with music (Ah, ah, ah-ah)
Just like a lovely real romance (Ah, ah)
All we'll do is daily dance
(Ah, ah, ah)
All we'll do is just dance (Ah, ah, ah)
All we'll do is just dance (Ah, ah, ah)
All we'll do is just—
[LUISA, spoken]
Whee. I'm exhausted
[EL GALLO, spoken]
But you can't be
The evening's just started!
[EL GALLO]
Round and round
Till the break of day
Candles glow
Fiddles play
Why not be wild if we feel that way?
Reckless and terribly gay!
[LUISA]
I'm ready anytime
If you'll take me, I'm
Ready to go!
So show the way to me
I will try to be
Ready to go!
[EL GALLO]
I seem to see Athens, it's terribly chic
Atop the Acropolis, it's terribly Greek
There's Venus, Adonis, and us—cheek to cheek
[LUISA, spoken]
Oh, how chic!
[EL GALLO]
To be Greek cheek to cheek
[Once again MATT rises into sight.]
[LUISA, spoken]
Observe the friendly natives
[HENRY & MORTIMER, spoken]
Hello there!
[LUISA, spoken]
La, how gay
[HENRY and MORTIMER turn to MATT and begin to "whip" him.]
Look, dear, they’re beating a monkey
Isn't it fun?
[LUISA puts down her mask.]
I wonder why anyone should be beating a monkey?
Oh, no, that's it
It's not a monkey at all
It's a man dressed in a monkey suit
Oh, that man— they've hurt him!
[EL GALLO, spoken]
Put up the mask
[LUISA, spoken]
But he is wounded!
[EL GALLO, spoken]
The mask! The mask!
[LUISA once again lifts the mask up to her face.]
[MATT, spoken]
Help!
[LUISA, spoken]
Oh, isn't that cute?
They're beating a man in a monkey suit
It's a show. La, how jolly
Don't stop, it's charming
Don't stop
[MATT, spoken]
Help!
[LUISA, spoken]
That's it. Writhe some more!
[EL GALLO & LUISA]
We'll just dance! (Ah, ah, ah, ah-ah, ah, ah, ah-ah)
We'll kick up our heels to music (Ah, ah, ah-ah)
And dance! (Ah, ah, ah, ah-ah, ah, ah, ah-ah)
Until my head reels with music (Ah, ah, ah-ah)
Just like a lovely real romance (Ah, ah)
All we'll do is daily dance
(Ah, ah, ah)
All we'll do is just dance (Ah, ah, ah)
All we'll do is just dance (Ah, ah, ah)
All we'll do is just—
[LUISA, spoken]
Couldn't we just sit this one out?
[EL GALLO, spoken]
Ridiculous! When there's music to be danced to?
Play, gypsies!
[HENRY & MORTIMER]
Ah
[EL GALLO, LUISA, HENRY & MORTIMER]
Round and round
'Neath a magic spell
Velvet gown
Pink lapel
Life is a colorful carousel
Reckless and terribly gay
[LUISA, EL GALLO, HENRY & MORTIMER]
I'm ready anytime (Gay) (Round and round and round and)
If you'll take me, I'm (We're so gay) (Round and round and round and)
Ready to go! (Terribly gay) (Round and round)
So show the way to me (Gay) (Round and round and round and)
I will try to be (We're so gay) (Round and round and round and)
Ready to go! (Terribly gay) (Round and round)
[EL GALLO]
We’ll be in Benghazi or maybe Bombay
I understand India is terribly gay
The natives assemble on feast day and play
[LUISA, spoken]
With their snakes?
[EL GALLO]
Yes! What a racket it makes!
[LUISA, spoken]
Oh, I think I'm going to love India
Such a big population, and
I adore crowds!
Oh, look, there's a fakir—
Hi, fakir!
[HENRY, spoken]
Arrivederci!
[LUISA, spoken]
Yes, see—he's there with his assistants
They all know Yogi—
And they're just loads of fun!
Oh, there's one— a young one—
They're putting him down on some nails
[LUISA puts down her mask.]
If he fails, he'll be cut to bits by those nails
[MATT, spoken]
Help!
[LUISA, spoken]
Well, somebody help him
[EL GALLO, spoken]
The mask!
[LUISA, spoken]
But he's bleeding!
Horrible!
[EL GALLO, spoken]
Mask!
[EL GALLO forces the mask up to LUISA's face.]
[LUISA, spoken]
Go on. Sit down harder!
He's a sissy
I don't believe he's a real fakir
They never complain
He's a fake fakir
[MATT, spoken]
Help!
[LUISA, spoken]
Fake!
[EL GALLO]
We'll—
Just—
[EL GALLO, LUISA, HENRY & MORTIMER]
Dance! (Dance, dance, dance)
We'll kick up our heels to music (Dance, dance)
And dance! (Dance, dance, dance)
Until my head reels with music (Dance, dance)
[EL GALLO, HENRY & MORTIMER, LUISA]
Just like a lovely real romance (Dance, dance) (Dance)
All we'll do is daily
I can see the friendly natives! (Dance, dance) (Ah! Ah! Ah! Ah!)
All we'll do is just dance! (Dance) (Ah)
All we'll do is just dance! (Dance) (Ah)
All we'll do is just
Round and round in a magic spell (Ah)
Round and round and round and round
All we'll do is just (Dance, dance) (Ah, ah)
All we'll do is just (Dance, dance) (Ah, ah)
All we'll do is just (Dance, dance) (Ah, ah)
All we'll do is just— (Dance, dance) (Ah, ah)
[EL GALLO & LUISA]
All we'll do is just—
[MATT, spoken]
Help!
[EL GALLO & LUISA, HENRY & MORTIMER]
Dance! (Dance, dance, dance, dance, dance, dance, dance, dance, dance)
