Having premiered on Annie Mac’s Hottest Record show on BBC Radio 1, “The Sound” immediately grabbed the hearts of those hungry for The 1975’s sleek and shimmery funk. Frontman Matty Healy spoke about the track containing a special “pop” confidence:
It wears its pop on its sleeve and it’s kind of un...
[Intro]
Well, I know when you're around 'cause I know the sound
I know the sound of your heart
Well, I know when you're around 'cause I know the sound
I know the sound of your heart
[Chorus]
Well, I know when you're around 'cause I know the sound
I know the sound of your heart
Well, I know when you're around 'cause I know the sound
I know the sound of your heart
[Verse 1]
I can't believe I forgot your name
Oh, baby, won't you come again?
She said, "I've got a problem with your shoes
And your tunes, but I might move in
And I thought that you were straight, now I'm wondering"
[Pre-Chorus]
You're so conceited, I said "I love you"
What does it matter if I lie to you?
I don't regret it, but I'm glad that we're through
So don't you tell me that you just don't get it
'Cause I know you do
[Chorus]
And I know when you're around 'cause I know the sound
I know the sound of your heart
Well, I know when you're around 'cause I know the sound
I know the sound of your heart
[Verse 2]
It's not about reciprocation, it's just all about me
A sycophantic, prophetic, Socratic junkie wannabe
And there's so much skin to see
A simple Epicurean philosophy
Oh, and you say (You say) I'm such a cliché
I can't see the difference in it either way
And we left things to protect my mental health
But you'll call me when you're bored and you're playing with yourself
[Pre-Chorus]
You're so conceited, I said "I love you"
What does it matter if I lie to you?
I don't regret it, but I'm glad that we're through
So don't you tell me that you just don't get it
'Cause I know you do
[Chorus]
I know when you're around 'cause I know the sound
I know the sound of your heart
Well, I know when you're around 'cause I know the sound
I know the sound of your heart
Well, I know when you're around 'cause I know the sound
I know the sound of your heart
Well, I know when you're around 'cause I know the sound
I know the sound of your heart
[Outro]
Well, I know when you're around 'cause I know the sound
I know the sound of your heart
Well, I know when you're around 'cause I know the sound
I know the sound of your heart
Well, I know when you're around 'cause I know the sound
I know the sound of your heart
Well, I know when you're around 'cause I know the sound
I know the sound of your heart
The Sound was written by Ross MacDonald & Matty Healy & George Daniel & Adam Hann.
The Sound was produced by Matty Healy & George Daniel & Mike Crossey.
Its the oldest song on the album as Matty stated in an interview here:
Though The 1975 can fall into the Indie Pop/Rock genre, “The Sound” seems to draw influences from 1980s New Wave, Synth-pop and Dance-pop, among other genres–the entire song is a pastiche of popular 1980s music.
Many of the lyrics match poetry and parallel other lyrics of Halsey’s about Matty Healy, however it is only speculation.
Certified platinum by the BPI on February 23, 2018.

“The Sound” has been around since before the first album, at first I thought it was too pop for the album. But I was convinced by one of my friends that the answer was to “show the song some love”. We were still working on it on the final day of the album session. I really enjoy playing this song li...
