Halfway across the world now and we are sitting here
Orphans who are motherless and huddled still with fear
But we can either hear them or know the fear they know
We just read the stock reports and watch our fortunes grow
We got troubles now, you say, right in our own backyard
There's schools and housing areas where many folks are barred
That's what we say, when comes the day to help our neighbours here
We say we can't today but maybe sometime in next year
That's the way this world has got to be
It's part of the heartache in a gross society
That's the way this world has got to be
Twisted minds and mass uncertainty
Along the city side streets are wagons of the law
Picking bums up off the street so many times I've saw
They keep 'em in the tank a-while just overnight and then
They let 'em go back to skid row but they'll be back again
People in their big cars driving through the slums
They've never had the bad times just more good times to come
Haven't time to stop though, or get themselves involved
If you wanna get ahead, boy, get your own problems solved
That's the way this world has got to be
It's part of the heartache in a gross society
That's the way this world has got to be
Twisted minds and mass uncertainty
The miners and their children in the hills and wondering why
They cannot find the work to do, the mines have all gone dry
Their minds are really pondering their silence hears their grief
But now they'll be a wandering, yes now they have to leave
That's the way this world has got to be
It's part of the heartache in a gross society
That's the way this world has got to be
Twisted minds and mass uncertainty
