Shadows

There used to be shadows here this time of day
We used to imagine here
That nothing would stand in our way

There was no exposure here
We thought shadows could shade the absurd
Now we're the shadows here
As the sun finds its way to the streets
Of our city our country our world

Defiance and sympathy for the people we've lost
Unbelievable empathy
We prevail through the pain and the cost

Do we think of our enemies
Do we hate them and hope for revenge
As we pray for the families
Who wish they could alter this end

There used be shadows here
Cast by buildings that stretched to the ends
The shadows were beautiful
And they're gone with our beautiful friends

Defiance and energy understanding and pride
Lightbeams of liberty
As we cheered for the heroes that tried
