This song means a lot to me. It was the first song I wrote after my Mum died. I had so much on my chest and didn’t really know how to process it. Rather than try to understand, I decided to write it as a simple letter. In fact it’s more like a Whatsapp. I think the overwhelming emotion at that time...
How you been
When we talk I feel the stars & the angels crowding in
Cheer me on
If I sing loud enough can you hear my songs
Me and my bro yeah we miss you loads
Couldn’t understand but I wished I’d known
I wished I’d been there more that’s what hurts the most
And Oh
Down to my bones
Wherever I go
You’ll always be a part of me
Be a part of me
And Oh
Now that you’re home
I’ll keep you close
You’ll always be a part of me
Be a part of me
Everything is different
When I remember what you said and I lift up my head
I get this feeling that you’rе listening
Need you more now than I did on sports days
I should follow my heart
But I’d rathеr figure out what would yours say
You were, always right and always fair
And always there
And Oh
Down to my bones
Wherever I go
You’ll always be a part of me
Be a part of me
And Oh
Now that you’re home
I’ll keep you close
You’ll always be a part of me
Be a part of me
Eyes wide open let me see
Golden shores and open seas
Fill me with the strength to say
I know I’ll see you again someday
And Oh
Down to my bones
Wherever I go
You’ll always be a part of me
Be a part of me
And Oh
Now that you’re home
I’ll keep you close
You’ll always be a part of me
Be a part of me
Part Of Me was written by Sam Merrifield & JC Stewart & Joel Baker.
Part Of Me was produced by Tobie Tripp.
Joel Baker released Part Of Me on Fri Nov 20 2020.
It was written shortly after my Mum’s funeral. It was my first day “back at work”. I was really nervous about the writing session. We spent the day crafting melodies and production ideas and then eventually I had to tell the guys what had just happened. After that the lyrics were written in about 30...
Tobie Tripp (producer) is brilliant and made it sound beautiful and hopeful. I’m a big fan of Sarah Juers and asked her to sing on it. The process was wonderful and very life giving.
The most basic instinct of wanting to talk to your parent. I wrote it like a WhatsApp message or something. Super basic. I wanted it to feel less poetic and more like a normal conversation. I was listening to a lot of Chance the Rapper at the time and he definitely inspired the song.
