[Intro]
I was out in Lubbock, Texas a few years back
And, uh, we had a show at the 19th Street Warehouse
And I had driven from eastern New Mexico to get there
To get to Lubbock from Clovis, New Mexico
You gotta go through a little town called Littlefield
Which is where Waylon Jennings was born
And where he grew up
Before he was in The Crickets and then before he became
The guy you know about, who I'm talkin' about
Beforе he became Waylon Jеnnings, he was a west Texas kid
So anyway, I was at the, uh
I was at the gig that night tryna figure out
You know, somethin' special to do
Tryna get a little spark and, uh
Figured we'd work up an old Waylon cover
So we did, and it stuck, I went and recorded it
Actually the day after he died
Um, we went into a studio
We went into Willie Nelson's studio in Pedernales
Just outside of Austin, we had a session booked to do
Some of my own demos, four or five songs
And we decided to blow those off and
Pay respects to, uh
A very inspiration character, old Hoss
Waylon Jennings
[Verse 1]
Everybody knows you've been steppin' on my toes
And I'm gettin' pretty tired of it
You keep steppin' out of line and a-messin' with my mind
If you had any sense, you'd quit
[Chorus]
Yeah, 'cause ever since you were a little-bitty teeny girl
You said I was the only man in this whole world
Now you better do some thinkin', then you'll find
You got the only daddy that'll walk the line
[Verse 2]
I keep workin' every day, all you wanna is play
And I'm tired of stayin' out all night
You keep comin' unglued from your funny little moods
Now, honey, that ain't right
[Chorus]
Yeah, 'cause ever since you were a little bitty teeny girl
You said I was the only man in this whole world
Now you better do some thinkin', then you'll find
You got the only daddy that'll walk the line
[Verse 3]
You keep packin' up my clothes, everybody knows
That you're still just a puttin' me on
Yeah, 'cause when I start walkin', I hear you start squawkin'
Beggin', "Baby, come back home"
[Chorus]
Yeah, 'cause ever since you were a little bitty teeny girl
You said I was the only man in this whole world
Now you better do some thinkin', then you'll find
You got the only daddy that'll walk the line
[Outro]
You got the only daddy that'll walk the line
You got the o—
