“Leader of the New Regime” is the 10th track on Lorde’s third studio album, Solar Power and serves as an interlude.
In the Spotify Storyline feature of this song, Lorde explains the meaning of the song:
This song is set in a distant or not-so-distant future, one where the environment is unlivable,...
[Verse 1]
Wearing SPF 3000 for the ultraviolet rays
Made it to the island on the last of the outbound planes (Ah-ah)
Got a trunk full of Simone and Céline, and of course, my magazines
I'm gonna live out my days
[Verse 2]
Won't somebody, anybody, be the leader of a new regime?
Free the keepers of the burnt-out scene another day
Lust and paranoia reign supreme
We need the leader of a new regime
Leader of a New Regime was produced by Lorde & Jack Antonoff & Malay.
Lorde released Leader of a New Regime on Fri Aug 20 2021.
I wanted to have a little reprieve and go in that Crosby, Stills & Nash direction a little bit and be like, “Where’s it going to go from here?” Whether it’s culturally, politically, environmentally, socially, spiritually. I felt that desire for doing something new.
This song is set in a distant or not-so-distant future, one where the environment is unlivable, society has broken down, and we’re all escaping to our far-flung natural sanctuaries to start again. I liked the image of a former popstar packing nothing but magazines and designer dresses.
