When asking our interviewees what they want to see for the future for women in hip-hop, Chicago legend Ang13 answered it in a way that was unexpected. We had to add it as its own separate interlude! It’s a truth that Hip-Hop may not be ready to hear.
[ANG13]
This whole time, women actually have been running hip-hop
Kool Herc’s sister had to give him the thumbs up for his first party in the park, cause she was the guardian at that time
Had she said no, we would not have hip-hop.
We would not have it.
Women are the backbone of this entire culture
And we don’t give the respect that we should
We are the mothers of the world
No mother gets the props that she supposed to
We’ve been living with First Ladies our entire lives:
Our mothers, our aunts, our grandmothers
There’s nothing we can do to make a man see us differently
We have to continue this fight
And we’ll probably never get the just due
But we still gotta be there, just like a mother would
We birthed these fools every single day
To slap us in the face
We’re gonna be right there
When they fall on their ass to help them up
Cause that’s what moms do, that’s what women do
We are nurturing people
But we’ll take all of the heat on our backs
In order for this culture to continue to be in existence
I bow down to every queen how wants to get into this
It’s gonna be hard, it’s gonna be disrespectful,
its gonna be degrading, but it’s gonna be worth it at the end
Because you done kept a whole generation of people
From either possibly being in a gang,
Getting killed, being a statistic
Just by being present and having something available
Such as the hip-hop culture to let people gravitate to
To be the opposite of what they’ve been surrounded with
Everything is women-led
And nobody can prove me wrong. Not one person.
Nobody.
