Continuing from “The Sun”, “Solar System” details the short respite in Phil’s journey before starting the climb up Mount Eerie, as he walks through the forest in the creekbed.
The song itself is said by Phil to heavily borrow and is inspired by “Fall Flood” by Little Wings. From “Headwaters”:
Pret...
[Intro]
Oh, a ball...
I am a ball...
A ball of fire...
[Verse 1]
Oh no! I am lacking
I want what I see
You, Fireball, have rolled away
And shaded valleys
So here I am in the creekbed
So here I feel my way, in the dark
What wonder? What treasure map?
What breaking of day?
What stream used to flow here?
And now what dusty decay!
[Chorus]
Let the flash flood begin!
Wash me down the canyon!
Quicksand pull me in!
Blow over me, Solar Wind
[Verse 2]
You're vultures in trees
I know you're out there
You're lanterns on lakes
I know you're out there
You're soccer balls on knees
Through your skirt I see
Your legs gracefully
I know you're out there
You're swaying and pleased
I know you're out there
You're vultures in trees
I know you're out there
In mountainous peaks
[Chorus]
Don't let gravity win
Blow on me, Solar Wind

The Microphones released II. Solar System on Tue Jan 21 2003.
Pretty much all of “Solar System” was made up while walking up a riverbed in Baja California, Mexico and humming the melody to “Fall Flood”. There are a million more subtle detailed references between The Microphones and Little Wings but we won’t bother with that now. It’s complicated.
