“I Wish” is a song written for a planned 1995 film adaptation of Into the Woods that went unproduced. It was to act as the introductory number of the film, in place of the “Prologue” from the original Broadway version.
[NARRATOR]
Once upon a time
In the distant past
In a far-off kingdom
In a wide green valley
Lay a little a village
At the edge of the woods
And everybody in it
Was busy
And cheerful and thriving and full of contentment
And yet
[ALL]
I wish
[NARRATOR]
Beset
[MAN]
I wish
[WOMAN]
I wish
[NARRATOR]
With unfulfilled longing
[WOMAN]
I wish my house was made of gold
[NARRATOR]
Or, as some would say, dreams
[MAN]
I wish my well was filled with beer
[MAN]
I wish
[WOMAN]
I wish my feet were not so cold
[JACK]
I wish my cow were not so old
[WOMAN]
I wish my son-in-law would disappear
[MAN]
I wish I had more hair
[WOMAN]
I wish
[MAN]
I wish
[WOMAN]
I wish I'd something nice to wear
[MAN]
I wish
[JACK]
I wish my cow could go with me to school
[JACK'S MOTHER]
I wish my son was not a fool
[CINDERELLA]
I wish I had a family that really liked me
[WOMAN]
I wish
[MAN]
I wish
[WOMAN & MAN]
I wish
[NARRATOR, spoken]
Now, in this village at the edge of the woods, there lived a baker...
[BAKER]
I wish
[NARRATOR, spoken]
And his wife...
[BAKER'S WIFE]
I wish
[NARRATOR, spoken]
And what they wished for, more than anything...
[BAKER & BAKER'S WIFE]
I wish
[NARRATOR]
Was...
[BAKER]
I wish we had a baby
[BAKER'S WIFE]
I want to have a child
[BAKER]
A pink and shiny baby
[BAKER'S WIFE]
A tiny baby
[BAKER]
A little whiny baby
[BAKER & BAKER'S WIFE]
Who only lives to drive its parents wild
I wish we had a baby
[BAKER]
Who gurgled and who smiled
[BAKER'S WIFE]
A pink and twinkly baby
[BAKER]
A crinkly baby
[BAKER'S WIFE]
A little wrinkly baby
[BAKER & BAKER'S WIFE]
A source of light
[BAKER'S WIFE]
Who cries all night
[BAKER]
Whose eyes grow bright
The minute that they see me
[BAKER & BAKER'S WIFE]
I wish we had a creamy
[BAKER]
Screamy
[BAKER'S WIFE]
Dreamy
[BAKER & BAKER'S WIFE]
Baby
[MAN]
I wish my wife were not my wife
[WOMAN]
I wish I looked like her
[MAN]
I wish
[WOMAN]
I wish my life were not my life
[MAN]
I wish
[WOMAN]
I wish I were as smart as her
[WOMAN]
I wish these shoes were not so tight
[MAN]
I wish my parents wouldn't fight
[WOMAN]
I wish I were younger
[WOMAN]
I wish I had a daughter
[BAKER & BAKER'S WIFE]
I wish we had a baby
[WOMAN]
I wish my husband had a job
[BAKER & BAKER'S WIFE]
Who gurgled and beguiled
A pink and twinkly baby
A crinkly baby
A little nibbly baby
[CINDERELLA]
I wish I could go to the Festival
[BAKER & BAKER'S WIFE]
A dribbly, bubbly, cuddly, giggly, teensy-weensy, bouncy
A squishy little baby
[MAN]
I wish I were a...
[WOMAN]
I wish I knew a...
[WOMAN]
I wish I had a...
[ALL]
I wish
