I’d Been Told

I went down to see an old friend
I had been told
He’d used his crapper like some sort of launch pad
Left it yawning at the big unknown
While he’d folded on the tiles
Like I’d folded somewhere
Sometime so long ago
He’d left me with the task of saying
"That’s him there but where now
I do not care to know."

The doc said they’d found pills by his bed
His liver had bled
That’s where they took the coat hanger
From around his neck
This weren't no accident
So I said "doc we’ll get this straight right now
I give as much of a fuck about all of that now
As he does laying here naked, digging you
As you yap about how."
And he turned from my friend
Looked me from head to toe
I said "I'm fine and I don’t need a check up
I'm going home."
He said "I ain't a doctor man
I am the coroner, and you can leave anytime you wish."
While he regarded me quite prematurely
Like he’d done so many stiffs

And I walked away and I felt OK
But that kinda made me think
I got to walking the streets I’d played in as a boy
I hit a bar to get me some drinks
And they bought me drinks
But all their good will left them tasting like
Chasers for my life
That’s when I realised that I was so alone
I felt like I might die
How we meant to make the rent
When we all live alone?
It’s like my old lady says
“I can’t stand it when you get home.”

And I'm saying Lord, my eyes
I get so tired sometimes
I could sleep forever
