I see you recognize me
Though age has changed my face a bit
And these rooms are so dimly lit
But here —Come grab a drink and sit
Where have all the years gone
When there was still room to improve?
Now when I feel the future move
It’s just like hurt on a bruise
Yes, old friend the state I’m in
Would lay low weaker men
And the dead do not improve
But you should’ve seen me in my time
All horns and eight foot 9”
Til death there’s always more to lose
Some called me a ‘monster’
But it bounces off my skin
For what’s a monster really
In the face of actual Armageddon?
Sure, I scared some lake kids
And I let some tires fly
In the summer of 1969
I was the Greatest Of All Time, man
But old friend, the state I’m in
Would lay low human men
‘And the dead do not improve’
But remember me in my prime
Four hoofs and teeth that shine
Til death there’s always more to lose
Once I could hear music
Pouring out of AM radios
And though it was so long ago
Those are still the songs I know
‘And time goes by so slowly’
And time is seldom fair
Well I fear I’m already there
Beyond the wild of self repair
Chasing days through the Johnson grass
I was a needle tracing a phonograph
Running circles in my groove
You should’ve seen me in my time
All horns and 10 foot high
Til death there’s always more to lose
Another toast to you and your kind ears
It’s good to still get recognized in town
And you know I hate to ask this now–
But could you cover these last few rounds?
