This is a new poem added to the third edition of the book useless magic: lyrics, poetry and sermons.
The poem is dedicated to the photographer Francesca Stern Woodman, who inspired the artwork of High As Hope.
Above 8th Avenue
I see a piece of fabric fluttering
Your girl wings desperately flapping.
For a moment hanging
and yet
Too hard a world for
Out of focus girls
Elsewhere a volcano is exploding
Coastlines are eroding
I am reading
another poem about you
How
At only 22 you got
Angry at your angels
and
You flew
And we, the women
pulling at your dress
Have only strands of poetry
To embroider you a net.
For Francesca was written by Florence Welch.
