“Brakeless” is based around an idea that the band’s writer and singer, Dan Campbell had in 2010, but never shared with the rest of the band.
It is one part of a project The Wonder Years are doing to celebrate the 10th anniversaries of The Upsides and Suburbia I’ve Given You All and Now I’m Nothing...
[Verse 1]
The bank sign out my window is laughing in my face
'Cause it's seven in the morning and only four degrees
And there's a city budget crisis, they're closing all the libraries
There's no money left for nothing
So they're only plowing Broad Street
[Verse 2]
Picking lunch over the subway
I got four bucks to my name
And it's another morning bike ride
In the fucking freezing rain
I pull a second pair of gloves on
Tying bags around my feet
I'm not getting trench foot this week
[Chorus]
I heard a song on the radio try to tell me I'm not alone
But I feel like it today
[Verse 3]
Swipe left to dodge a car door
12th and Cecil B
Caught my front wheel in the trolly tracks
Slid across the street
I showed up to work all bloodied up
But still got all my teeth
And lately that's what's passing as lucky
Lucky for me
[Chorus]
I heard a song on the radio try to tell me I'm not alone
But I feel like it today
And I heard a song on the radio
Said that that's just the way it goes
And I think I'm gonna break
[Bridge]
I keep thinking of ways to make it seem like an accident
Pull the brake off my bike so if the bus runs the light well then
I've been telling myself that it can't be that serious
But if I'm talking like this I guess it is
[Chorus]
I heard a song on the radio try to tell me I'm not alone
And I heard a song on the radio
Said that that's just the way it goes
And I think I'm gonna break
Brakeless was written by Dan Campbell.

The Wonder Years released Brakeless on Fri Oct 23 2020.
In an interview with Alt 104.5, the Philadelphia radio station that premiered the song, Dan Campbell revealed:
“Brakeless is centered in 2008, when I was living above the Petal Pusher Flower Shop on South Broad Street, and I was at Temple, and I was teaching an after school program at 21st and Arch...
