After Allison comes down with COVID-19, Jerry laments how, no matter our best efforts, “bad things happening” to us cannot be avoided. Despite feeling out of control, he promises to stick it out by Allison’s side as she fights her illness.
[JERRY]
When I was a kid
I'd hold my breath
Three times a day
In a row
I'd lock all the doors
Over and over
Skip cracks in the pavement below
Thinking
This will stop the bad things
From happening
This will make my little world okay
I will stop the bad things
From happening
Keep those wolves at bay
The one time that I didn't happen to drive her
Was when she was taken too soon
Yeah, you're damned if you do
And damned if you don't
Like some morbid cosmic cartoon
Still, you make all the plans
And you do all the math
And you keep your lines nice and clean
You look at each angle
You drive straight ahеad
That's when the car starts to careen
Oh, why can't we just stop thе bad things
From happening?
How to keep our little worlds okay?
But the thing about the bad things
Is they just love happening anyway
And I look out
On the city
So many lights still on
Are others
Keeping vigil
Till the cold blue dawn?
Is each light
Like a promise
Saying, "just hold on"?
Now you're here
My fault or not
And once again, I've no control
I know that I have to try to surrender
But you've got a hold on my soul
And I can't stop the bad things
From happening
I can't say it will all be okay
But I can still decide to
Stay and sit beside you
Come what may
'Cause I don't regret one moment
And one good thing
Makes the bad ones go away
