The first chapter of Breathe, “Fever”, begins with Allison, a nurse in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, waking up in a stranger’s home in Mexico City after a crazy night. She slowly takes in the situation, and scolds herself for being so careless.
[ALLISON]
Wow, what a night!
Holy hell, my head—
I must look a sight
My body feels like lead
I could use a mint
Who's that in my bed?
Wait, it's not my bed!
Oh, shit, oh, shit, Allison
What'd you do this time?
Just breathe, breathe
(She inhales sharply.)
I'm thinking maybe I'm
Totally screwed
You'd think that I'd know
Better by now
Oh, shit, Ally, I mean... wow
I'm done with taking dares
Like picking up strangers at a bar
Thank you, so-called "friends"
'Cause I don't know where I am
And I don't know who you are
And, yes, you're pretty cute
But if it's all the same
I'd feel better if I found my bra
I'd feel better if I knew your freaking namе!
Oh, shit, oh, shit, Allison
What'd you do this time?
Better gеt your clothes
I suppose I could run away
Or maybe climb
Out on the ledge, and pledge: never again!
Yeah, I atone
(ALLISON's phone rings.)
Oh, God, where's my phone?
They say that hindsight's 20/20
But this time, I'm flying blind
I took that extra drink
I didn't stop to think
Like my libido has a mind
I could blame it on my friends
But that really doesn't fly
It's just the things that I've seen lately
Make me wanna throw my hands up, and cry
Oh, shit, oh, shit, Allison
What'd you do this time?
Going to a wedding and bedding the best man
Itself is not a crime
But something's gotta give
Or someone's gonna break
This ain't no way to live
How much can I take?
Oh, shit, he's awake...
