Sometimes when I lay in bed at night
The door moves walls and north changes sides
And suddenly the years lift off my chest
And I’m in a room I’ll never see again
I reach to touch cold glass
But memories don’t last
And those years come back to bed
Thought I was clever to hide the tears behind a yawn
I watched in the rearview mirror until the roof was gone
But when I left I took a plank of hardwood floor
And soon I’ll hang it outside my front door
For so many years it did its job
Lived as backup inside the garage
But now it’s meant for something more
The weather here is about the same as then
The grass is slightly greener, but the air is just as thin
And while I can’t remember every single place I’ve been
I’ve been catching echoes of the me from way back when
In the mirror on the wall of a home in a town
Photographs of old friends who I still think about
And a room that I left
That I’ll never see again
