Lawrence Wayne (aka “Wild Man Fisher”) was born on November 6, 1944. As a teenager, Wayne was diagnosed with bipolar disorder and schizophrenia and was committed to a mental hospital after having frequent outbreaks.
In the mid-60s, Wild Man Fisher began taking medication and performing at frequent live acts. He spent most of this time street-performing for dimes or nickels, which were improvised acapella songs. Astounded by his characteristic outsider music, Frank Zappa took up Wild Man Fisher on his record label, Bizarre, and released An Evening with Wild Man Fisher in 1967. Wayne passed away in 2011 after spending periods suffering paranoid episodes and time in more mental hospitals.
Today, Wild Man Fisher is seen as a fascinating example of outsider music, performed by those with little to no formal music experience.
