Phranc (born Susan Gottlieb; August 28, 1957) is a singer-songwriter and self-proclaimed “All-American Jewish lesbian folksinger.” She began her career in the late 70’s as part of several Los Angeles punk bands, such as Nervous Gender, Catholic Discipline, and Castration Squad. During the 80’s, she pursued a solo career in folk music, debuting with Folksinger in 1985. She would later follow up with I Enjoy Being a Girl (1989), Positively Phranc (1991), the Goofyfoot EP (1995), and Milkman (1998). She would also open for bands and musicians like The Smiths, Hüsker Dü, Violent Femmes, Billy Bragg, and others in live shows.

Despite not being too well known of an artist, she has been an important influence to the Queercore movement. Many queercore bands and musicians have collaborated with her, and the song “Uncle Phranc” by Team Dresch is dedicated to her.

Outside of music, Phranc has created art out of cardboard as “The Cardboard Cobbler” and became a highly-selling Tupperware saleslady.
