By their own words, Cheekface is a “rock combo from Los Angeles made up of guitarist and signing person Greg Katz, bassist and other singing person Amanda Tannen, and drummer Mark "Echo” Edwards.“ Vocally, Katz meanders back and forth from a rhythmic Sprechgesang technique (an ode owed to the likes of Jonathan Richman) to wide-reaching but simple indie pop hooks backed by "oohs” and “ahs” from Tannen.
After moving to the LA area from New York, Tannen was seeking a writing partner. She became friends with Katz (then bassist of LA Font) and upon learning that he played guitar the two decided to try writing together. Echo, long acquainted with Katz in the LA music scene, was sent demos of such early tracks as “Crud,” “House Shoes,” and “Glendale” to provide drums.
Eschewing traditional release structure and refusing to pay for publicity, Cheekface puts out a seemingly-constant stream of singles on Katz’s own New Professor Music, dropping a new track as soon as it is complete. Combined with an earnest and approachable social media presence – regularly replying to fans, posting memes, and discussing matters such as attending therapy – they have earned a loyal following which is more than happy to provide word-of-mouth advertising. This approachable nature can be seen in live shows where they have invited entire audiences to participate on-stage with them.
