The burning of Zozobra is a 93-year old Sante Fe, NM tradition. Zozobra (also known as Old Man Gloom, OMG) is a 50-foot high marionette that represents humanity’s failings, faults, and selfishness. By burning him each year, the gloom is lifted and hope is renewed.
Friday night we ditched our glooms
And watched the sparks
Shooting from his arms
A body a-flame a howling wave
Goodbye
[Chorus]
And the people’s hopes
Rose with the fire
Saturday we shared happiness
Matching turquoise rings
Signatures stamped in silver
Someone was playing “Heart of Gold”
[Chorus]
And the people’s hopes
Rose with the fire
And the people’s hopes
Rose with the fire
And the people’s hopes
Rose with the fire
