Rabbi Darkside
It all started on a rooftop
My heart was beating like a boombox
The night was alight with moonwash
I could see all the way to New Lots
The block below was a void
It seemed like overlords were over-employed
I thought my head would explode from all the noise
Banging around inside it while outside was silent as thorns
From the midst of the grid I swore I saw a light
The wind was whipping up a whisper that was cold as ice
I turned my focus to the ground in hopes of holy sights
But couldn’t be sure that the dark wasn’t brimming with poltergeists
Came here in the 2K on a roll of dice
With nothing but a heart of gold naiveté and no advice
Just a couple goals in life knowing the road’s the reward
And recorded tales live forever in the poems I write
All my couplets were a double helix of middle schoolers and mic cords
That grew into a metaphor and extended through my life force
Lesson plans were evident
Resident with investment plan
Evidence in the madness the mess the message the man
I been the Better Bomb in it the Cheddar Bob in it
I been the everybody get along in one conglomerate
I been a pawn in it and been the audience and been anonymous
And been applauded for what I consider just the obvious
So up here on this ledge I feel a reckoning approaching
Like a messenger in coach and the sound of breathless horses
A moment when I lost my faith has brought me to this awful place
Where I feel like a stranger in my own accommodations
Not to further complications but there’s murmurs from the basement
And the work to conquer voices is against habituation
A cemetery’s patience
I take in my surroundings
The lunar bath is all around
The City should be drowning…
I get my footing settled find a meter take a step
Manhattan across the bridges and the sunrise to my left
The morning starts to melt the dream and ring the day anew
Yet I know inside myself there is a sense of déjà vu
The view about the same
From ruins come music
And from music comes courage to confront the uncertain
So I turn towards the day
Turn from the moon
Open up the door
And of course
There was…
You
