Please don’t feel shame
As if I could never look at you the same
For the record there is nothing that’s changed
And I won’t be holding you from me
Folding you up, cold shoulder and into my pocket
Stowed like a dated, discarded newspaper article
Read and absorbed and replaced

Please don’t feel shame
Does desire leave a blemish on your name?
You’re entitled to your relevant aims
And I won’t be telling the world
Of the stories I heard
From the mouth of the girl
Whose heart wasn’t far
From the places that I also strayed

Please don’t feel strange
I’ll attempt to make it easier to stay
Even though you’ll still be feeling this way
For a time, and I have to decline
So persist with what’s yours, I’ll keep mine
And we’ll both carry on with our lives
And the passage of time

Please don’t feel shame
You and I will just be heading on our way
With regrets about the needless mistakes
But we can’t be holding a grudge
When the headlines change every day
And the stories I was absorbed in
Are soon yesterday’s news
And as much as I’d like to
Retain them and you
You’ll probably struggle to stay
No, you don’t have to cover your face
No, you don’t have to exit in shame
