The grip on this 800-acre homestead in, uh, Homer, Alaska
Whenever I say the word "Homer" everybody goes "The Simpsons!"
It's so sad, hah
Nobody goes, "The philosopher"
But I was so lucky because you couldn't help but feel like you were something really special 'cause you were surrounded in such special things
These incredible mountains and the water
And these huge meadows
And even if you were having a bad day
You'd get out there and you're like
"You know, it's okay. I'm okay."
But it's hard in the cities
It's been hard for me, at least coming here
Like going to LA and seeing all the murder that goes on
All the crime, all the plucked eyebrows and puffy lips, and
It's just sad, it's ugly, really
It's kind of insulting to the senses
And you can't help but start feeling kinda down on yourself
Look what we've fucking done
Look what we've done to the Black people
Look what we've done to the Indians
Look what we're doing to the world
And it's a drag, you know?
Really, we're just beautiful by nature
[Verse 1]
People livin' their lives for you on TV
They say they're better than you and you agree
He says, "Hold my calls from behind those cold brick walls"
Says, "Come here, boy, there ain't nothing for free"
Another burger, another hotdog, some fries
And the wish in the well, hope your health don't go to hell, well
Another doctor's bill, a lawyer's bill, another cute cheap thrill
You know you love him if you put him in your will, but
[Chorus]
Who will save your souls when it comes to the flower now?
And who, who will save your souls after all those lies that you told, boy?
And who will save your souls if you won't save your own?
La dee-dee-da, dee-da, dee-da-da, da-la-da
[Verse 2]
We try to hustle them, try to bustle 'em, try to cuss 'em
And the cops want someone to bust down on Orleans Avenue
Another day, another dollar, another war
Another tower went up where the homeless had their homes
So we pray to as many different gods as there are flowers
But we call religion our friend
We're so worried about saving our souls
Afraid that God will take His toll that we forget to begin, but
[Chorus]
Who will save your souls when it comes to the babies now?
Who, who will save your soul after all those lies that you told, boy?
And who will save your soul if you won't save your own?
La dee-dee-da, dee-da, dee-da-da, da-la-da
[Verse 3]
Well, some are walking, some are talking, some are stalking their kill
Got social security but it don't pay your bills
There are addictions to feed and there are mouths to pay
So you bargain with the Devil, but you're okay for today, say
That you love them, take their money and run
Say it's been swell, sweetheart, but it was just one of those things
Those flings, those strings you've got to cut
So get out on the streets, girls, and bust your butts
[Chorus]
Who will save-ave your souls when it comes to the babies?
Oh, who, who will save your souls after all those lies that you told, boy?
And who will save-ave your souls if you won't save your own?
La dee-dee-da, dee-da, dee-da-da, da-la-da
If you won't save your own?
[Spoken]
Thank you
Thanks!
Wrote this song about a girl that doesn't like me very much
It's kinda funny, like, the more you're in front of people
The more you sing for different people
Everything actually kinda stays the same, to a degree
Because, in normal life, three people hate you
And, say, five like you, or whatever
So when you get more and more famous
Five-thousand hate you, and however many more, you know
Stays the same, but it's funny 'cause
Those ones are quite vocal, and I
It's weird to go from living in like a bus
Or coming from Alaska
To having people call you a songwriter
Really, really weird
'Cause, all of a sudden, people start treating you differently
Now that I have a car that doesn't break down
People are like, "Oh, selling out, are ya?"
