“Way Back” is about Mark overcoming grief following the death of her mother. In an interview with Stereogum, Mark described arriving “at that stage of, not feeling better but, like, it [being] easier to deal with the fact that [her] mom was gone.”
[Verse 1]
I was broken
I was acting up
For good reason
Lost all of my love
[Pre-Chorus]
May still be aching
But I see the sun come up
Days overtaking
And I feel I've overcome
[Chorus]
I've found my way back
I've found my way back
Way back, my way back
Way back, my way back
Way back, my way back
Way back, my way back
[Verse 2]
I've been coping
It's been really rough
And I'm quoting
I have had enough
[Pre-Chorus]
May still be aching
But I see the sun come up
Days overtaking
And I feel I've overcome
[Chorus]
I've found my way back
I've found my way back
Way back, my way back
Way back, my way back
Way back, my way back
Way back, my way back
Way back, my way back
Way back, my way back
Way back, my way back
Way back, my way back

When you lose someone that’s really important to you, I feel like it’s something that never really goes away. It’s almost learning how to live with an empty feeling, it’s weird. Something’s always missing, but you kind of get used to it.
