This was the first song written for this album. Chris was inspired when he was on tour and heard that Harris Wittels died. Combine that with Chris' ever increasing fear of his own mortality and you get this song.
He sometimes laughs when he plays it live because he can’t take anything seriously.
On the night you died I was still alive
I heard the news travel from the front seat and I hung my head and cried
I focused on the blue light from the stereo
And I imagined what it might feel like if I could float
Away
Out the window
Over the Gulf of Mexico
On the night you left I was in my head
I was stressed out from an argument I had with my girlfriend
I can’t remember now what it was all about
I’m sure it started with me complaining about the way my life is now
Away
Out the window
Over the Gulf of Mexico
Out the window
Until I can see the light shine for me
We can say we tried and ran out of time
But that’s a lie and we know it
We can say we tried but we just gave up
You can only fall so many times til you don’t get up
Away
Out the window
Over the Gulf of Mexico
Out the window
Until I can see the light
Until I can see the light shine for me
