“We are doomed to be what we are, and dreaming of anything else is futile. But there's another slightly different notion in there too. The phrase of which the title is obviously a parody is 'to err is human, to forgive, divine', and I meant for the second part to be significant by its absence. The basis you [user] are looking at it from is essentially theistic, given that it follows from the existence of divinity, and puts that divinity above humanity. But the title is intended to say that divinity itself is a futile dream which mankind dreams about and for itself. So attempting to emulate it is futile not only because you're doomed to remain a non-divine being, but also because of the nature of that which you're trying to emulate.”
