When Brian David Gilbert applied for a video producer position at Polygon.com, they requested a video cover letter. He wrote a song to make a video to show his musical, video magic, and writing skills. Polygon is a gaming website and YouTube channel. If you’re wondering, yes he got the job.
(Intro, spoken)
Hello. My name is Brian David Gilbert, and I am applying to become
(Sung)
A Polygon dot com video producer
I think I'd be an asset to the team, don't you, sir?
I like making videos, I like to think
And I like to fight baddies with my best pal Link
I used to live Baltimore, but now I'm in New York
'Cause I wasn't much in Baltimore for odd video work
So I moved myself to Brooklyn with a bag and a suit
And I got a countdown timer 'til I'm destitute
(unsettling silence)
When my twin and I make videos, here's the basic gist
I would edit in Premiere and he would not exist
Bet you didn't see that coming; I'm a movie magic pro
So expect the unexpected and welcome to the show!
Efficient in Adobe Suite but improv's where I shine
And I've got a modest following for videos online
I've gone viral a few times, but they're not good
And I also went to Hopkins
(Spoken)
But that's neither here or there because I studied writing seminars and cognitive science? And I... er... I don't think I'll- I guess I could use the writing for-for th... I'm saying I went to college
(Sung)
My love of gaming seems to not be in what I create
But I grew up on everything Nintendo, it was great!
I love Samus, I love Fox McCloud, and I love Waluigi
Toad and Tingle, Olimar, and also Waluigi again
The fact is, I love Polygon
And all the strange and magic videos you put on
You push the envelope with things unique and new
And that's why weird creators gravitate to you
Though the videos you make seem like they might not amount to much
Your videos have helped me way more times than I can count, and such
A harmless source of joy is something I want to contribute to
And if you give me such a chance, I promise I will follow through
And help create something good, a series like these
Things that help an anxious guy like me feel at ease
You built a great community, I'd love to do the same
And together we can do much more than a video about a game
