These Days

I’ve been feeling out of touch
With my brain, yet I stay moving in a rush
Can’t imagine distraction’s a healthy crutch, but
These days I don’t imagine much

At the first sign of tension
I reach for a means to divert my attention
Haven’t been totally bored since ’09
Yet I’m so entertained that I’m bored all the time
A mind’s a rough thing to waste;
Increasingly my mind’s an unfamiliar place
Headphones on at all hours and a phone
To squash rumination, dispel the unknown
I wanna marinate—
Stare the anxiety of boredom in the face
Soak it in till my mind drifts
I’m so tired of feeling mindless
But it’s sad that it feels like a feat
To watch TV without checking a second screen
Everything at my beck and call except
The ability to muster up the will to disconnect
And be alone with my thoughts
A once-forced art now seemingly lost
I’m attached to distraction, it’s nearly bionic
Is this really what we wanted?
